This mountain of God was not in heaven as Milton conceived, but was a reference to the topography of the island upon which the capital was located. His walking in the midst of the stones of fire was a reference to the king’s being unapproachable when in the sanctuary of his throne room. From God, however, he could not hide, for God promised to bring him down to the
